The Pixies: Gouge

If only the original Pixies had sold as many records as all the bands who claimed to have been influenced by the Pixies have since. If only America embraced the Pixies as much as the British, who are responsible for this hour-long documentary. Live footage from the same early Pixies show across the pond is pretty crappy but not so crappy that it masks the band's brilliance. But what keeps you glued to your seat are the interviews cut in with Bowie, Bono, P.J. Harvey, Radiohead's Thom Yorke and Mr. Black Francis himself. (The only Pixie missing from the present-day interviews is Kim Deal. Hmmm…) This is more a celebration of the music than the band's painful divorce a dozen years ago, which reportedly plays out more fully in the new Pixies' documentary loudQuietloud that premiered at March's SXSW and was shown briefly in Los Angeles. Repeats 10:45 p.m. June 3-4.
