This ain't your everyday cooking show. Tomorrow night, June 5, Robert Karimi brings his performance kitchen to UC Irvine. On the menu: storytelling, activism and community-building. And a side of laughter.
Who is Robert Karimi? He's a Minneapolis-based interdisciplinary artist who performs across the country as his alter-ego, Mero Cocinero, billed as “The Most Progressive Cook in America.” The Iranian/Guatemalan activist sees food as an equalizer and believes that a revolution can begin in the kitchen. His latest interactive show promotes cooking as a cultural movement to combat the rising epidemic of Type 2 Diabetes and improve the world's health.

In this free, one-night-only event, held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Humanities Instructional Building (HIB) 135, Karimi performs his Greatest Hits, a keynote performance created for the 2011 Alliance of Artists' Communities conference. Christine Balance, an assistant professor in Asian American Studies at UCI, will also lead a talk with the performer. More details here.
