Yes, it's that time of year again. The Grand Prix comes to Long Beach, delighting race-loving tourists and enraging locals who have to endure the noise of the obscenely powerful engines all day long. But hey, criticizing this kind of spectacle seems almost un-American, and watching the endlessly circling cars can put one in a healthy meditative state. But those who hate the race can catch some pretty compelling pop en espaƱol , courtesy of Mexican performer Aleks Syntek. The music is skillfully crafted pop (think Central American Idol . . . but a little more interesting, and about 20 years older) that should encourage plenty of race moms high off exhaust fumes to shake their tailpipes.
