Rogue's Tribute to Voodoo Doughnut: Bacon Maple Ale

The Rogue Ale Brewery of Newport, Oregon has created a trifecta of culinary trendiness: Voodoo Doughnut Bacon Maple Ale. The concept works on so many levels: Gourmet donuts are en vogue, and Rogue paired with Voodoo Doughnut, the granddaddy of hip donuts. They have fun varieties such as the “Captain My Captain,” topped with vanilla frosting and Captain Crunch with Crunch Berries, “Cock and Balls,” shaped like male genitalia, and “Texas Challenge,” a donut six times the regular size that, if you eat within 80 seconds, you get fo' free.

When you uncap the 750mL bottle, you're greeted with a strong smell
of maple syrup. A sip of the ale starts with the bacon taste; it comes
across as a plastic-like taste but it comes into its own with a more
authentic aftertaste. The scent of maple is stronger than the actual
taste of it. Still, it's certainly a sweet beer. If you're the type of
person that can finish a few bacon maple bars,
then you will probably be able to finish a 750mL bottle of this. If
not, you'll have no trouble finding people to share it with–it has had
the attention of beer enthusiasts and bacon lovers since it was released
to a limited audience this fall.

Customers have flooded local craft beer retailers with calls searching for the hot pink bottle. Until
fairly recently, customers outside of Oregon (and a handful of other
lucky locations) had to order from the Rogue Brewery's website
for around $24 (including shipping). Total Wine & More just started
carrying it this week, and BevMo! hopes to have it in stock on Friday.

It's brewed with applewood smoked bacon, maple flavoring and Briess cherrywood smoked malt. Read the full list of ingredients here, and drool.

Now that it's coming to town, tell us your experience with the brew in the comment section!
