So, I think zines — those bite-sized little handmade publications on just about anything — are pretty cool in that tactile, real-life-paper-and-staples kind of way, and if you think so too, you should check out the inaugural OC Zine Fest THIS SATURDAY at Diego's Downtown in Santa Ana. It runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and will feature workshops on everything from zine making and screen printing to police interaction. Oh, and it's free to attend.
In short, it will be cool times.

Why have the event? Well, as we reported earlier this year, OC's zine scene is on the up. There's already zine fests in LA, Claremont, Riverside, and just about every major met, and Orange County's burgeoning zine scene could use some uniting, so why not.
“I decided to organize this zine fest because I saw a desire for one among some of the artists in the community,” says Aimee Murillo, one of the organizers of the event, and, disclosure, our clubs editor. “I was still amazed at the outpouring of support and interest from local zinesters, artists, independent publishers, librarians, friends, most of whom I've never met or heard of. It made me realize just how big, albeit hidden, the zine community is in this county.”
It's a quickly growing community: Zines are starting to show up in Orange County libraries, and Santanero, Santa Ana's homegrown city zine, publishes 1,000 copies quarterly.
Post fest, there's going to be an after party at the Ad Arts Building (1058 E 1st St. Santa Ana 92701) with music sets from Hollow Ran, Technocrat, Bur Gur, Cheezedow and GRN+GLD DJ's Chip Monk, Repeated Measures, and Dirty Merlin.
