San Francisco’s Sean Hayes makes sweet, sometimes sad country folk that sounds like Michael Hurley with the raw parts healed over. But the song that surprised the most sets of ears was probably Mark Farina’s remix of his “Rattlesnake Charm,” which puts big ol’ kick drums under the banjo picking and ended up sort of improbably front and center on the dance floor. If there’s ever an American Anthology of House Music , they can put that on DVD 3 (“Social Songs”), but for the rest of us right now, Hayes is making understated and modestly beautiful songs (yes, even “No, No Guantanamo”) that fit as well with fireflies as they do with strobe lights.
