Fans of Stockholm-based indie shellbacks Shout Out Louds were introduced to a quieter, more mature band last February, when the group released their third album, Work. A pared-down version of previous efforts (which easily jumped onto both radio and the soundtracks of medium-budget quirky rom-coms), Work showed Shout Out Louds trimming the novel orchestral fat that made their sound so unmistakable, this time revealing the core of their success: laid-back, no-frills pop—perhaps an influence of their Seattle recording environment. Produced by Phil Ek (Fleet Foxes, Band of Horses, the Shins), Work might skip over the jangly, folkloric side of the Shouts, but that’s what live shows are for: to satiate the musical tastes of fans new and old with a scan of the entire catalog.
