Sights From This Weekend’s OC Japan Fair

OC Japan Fair is going on this weekend at OC Fairgrounds until Sunday. These pictures from Friday night, the first night of the fair, shows the usual suspects of:

Takoyaki Tanota with the longest lines…

This Korean-style, grilled-squid-on-a-stick vendor’s smoke-shrouded stall…

Tamagoyaki from Egghausted being cooked and sculpted into Minions and other characters…

Scantily-clad anime character figurines at the merchandise area…

But then there were things that this reporter did not recall seeing last year, starting with this Filipino food stall…

And a pachinko-like carnival game booth with these prizes…

And a video gaming area…

And this Japanese maid cafe where Japanese girls serve and play hostess to customers while wearing the exact costume and cat ears depicted on this sign…

Admission is $8. Parking is $9. More info at http://www.oc-japanfair.com

Before becoming an award-winning restaurant critic for OC Weekly in 2007, Edwin Goei went by the alias “elmomonster” on his blog Monster Munching, in which he once wrote a whole review in haiku.
