What you don't know can ruin your life—a lesson ruthlessly demonstrated in Frank Wedekind's story of a group of young teenagers on the brink of adulthood and dealing with a confusing new sensation called lust. Originally a German play that debuted in 1892, Spring Awakening (then called The Awakening of Spring) was unsurprisingly banned; it's raw and honest sexuality (about school children, no less), plus themes on abuse and suicide, was deemed unsuitable for the stage. The modern adaption even managed to surprise today's unshockable audience, grabbing the country's attention as well as eight Tony Awards. We can thank Spring Awakening's epic score penned by Duncan Sheik for that. Fun fact: Lea Michele played lead Wendla in the original Broadway cast.
