So you missed your favorite stoner-party-band-of-all-time-with-a-new-singer a few weeks ago at the Palladium. That’s okay: Sublime With Rome announced the first leg of their 2010 summer tour, with 19 dates that . . . don’t include Southern California. The closest they get is Mountain View’s Shoreline Amphitheatre (June 6) and the Santa Barbara Bowl (June 12) for a few radio festivals. The Sublime camp says there’s definitely more to come, so don’t worry. You can probably expect a gigantic homecoming show before September. RE-LIKE THE LIKE
Remember indie-pop sweethearts The Like? Five years ago, they were a trio of cute teenage girls with musical pedigrees. Vocalist Z Berg’s dad was former Geffen A&R man/record producer Tony Berg, bassist Charlotte Froom’s father was producer Mitchell Froom, and drummer Tennessee Thomas’ dad was longtime Elvis Costello drummer Pete Thomas. They’ve since reshuffled their lineup, bringing in keyboardist Annie Monroe and bassist (and Long Beach resident) Laena Geronimo to the mix. A former member of the Starlite Desperation, Devon Williams and Residual Echoes, Geronimo had the Like playing at local dives they’d never been to—such as Alex’s Bar and The Prospector. “Playing these places is just so fun and real, with music at the core of it all,” Geronimo says. “Just doing it because you love it.” They’re set to release a new, Mark Ronson-produced album in June. In the meantime, you can catch the now-down-and-dirtier the Like at the Glass House (200 W. Second St., Pomona, 909-865-3802) on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at the FYF Fan Appreciation Show. RUNNING WITH LETTERMAN
Late Show host David Letterman started a new music label called Clear Entertainment/C.E. Music, and his first signee was a band straight out of Huntington Beach, pop-punk purveyors Runner Runner. One of their members, Jon Berry, was a founding member of similar-sounding pop-punk purveyors Rufio. Don’t know if Letterman has them on his playlist, but their tour starts this month. WE HEART AVI BUFFALO, BUT ENOUGH ALREADY
Long Beach indie-pop darlings Avi Buffalo’s eponymous full-length is finally out. It’s a collection of fragmented love songs that do more than ape the Shins. As Nate Jackson said in his April 27 post, “Every once in a while, a band like this can throw all of their artsy singer/songwriter influences in a blender and still find room to be original.” Their record-release show at Long Beach’s Fingerprints Records had a line wrapped around the building, and we heard their Troubadour show was stellar. Now hipsters can be put to rest, and we can stop talking about them.
