Violence. Sex. Power. Rage. These are a few of the lyrical themes of Swans’s music in the 1980s; thirty years later, not much has changed. After enjoying popularity in Europe and gaining a cult following at that, the following three decades have left Swans with the same angst, same bank of musical preferences (slow tempos, detuned guitars, and distorted electronics), but a refreshing penchant for experimentation. Their latest album, To Be Kind (2014) is a testament to this, where tracks contain the familiar, new, and unexpected all at once.
