Thank God It's Monday: This Week's Shows

Today we're recommending something slightly different: bowling. That truly American pastime- just ask Homer Simpson-remains straightforward at its core, but the trappings have changed with the years; some will still remember the legendary and now sadly long gone Kona Lanes in Costa Mesa and its series of “rock and bowl” nights. Monday Night Strike, hosted by Strike itself over in Tustin, is yet a more recent example of reinvention, with DJs spinning hip-hop and R&B while you and your compatriots desperately avoid yet another run of 7-10 splits.

Chiddy Bang, one of our featured artists in this
week's music section, play at the Glass House in Pomona as part of their
ridiculously fast-rising success. Thanks to a pretty steady groundswell
of blog hype due to their indie-friendly take on hip-hop–not for
nothing does the duo use samples from the likes of MGMT, Passion Pit and
Radiohead among others–they've already scored chart hits overseas this
year and are looking ahead to the release of a formal debut album in a
couple of months following earlier mix tapes.

Moon Pearl and Italic Indian are headlining the first
summer show from the Acrobatics Everyday crew at UC Irvine, taking a
little advantage of the post academic year break to raise a ruckus.
Irvine's Moon Pearl kick off a California tour of sorts with their
murkily skewed random pop noise. A song like “Silver Lining” has a clear
hook throughout for all the bubbling swirls and feedback, while
Westminster's Italic Indian will be celebrating the release of their
Drowsy Bruise album featuring their engagingly cryptic-and often heavily
echo-laden-noise-into-ambient collages.
