There are four instruments played in the Brombies band: guitar, standup bass, mandolin and banjo. No drums, nothing electric. These string pieces, paired with the vocal harmonizing from husband and wife duo George and Jo Ellen Doering, capture the enduring spirit of old school bluegrass. Think Bill Monroe or the Osborne Brothers—it's that kind of quick-fingered playing and down home country crooning that makes this band so damn amiable. Winning songwriting competitions all over the country and even charming the Nashville music scene, the Brombies bring their traditional bluegrass to the Muckenthaler Cultural Center as part of the venue's Muck Roots concert series. You'd never guess that they hail from Los Angeles.
