The Byrds weren’t all things to all people but they made a ferocious try—the band blew from folk to psych to country rock and from line-up to storied line-up across two decades. David Crosby, Kim Fowley, Gram Parsons and Joe Maphis all had parts of varying prominence in the Byrds story, and the discography left behind now is as rewarding as it is bottomless. Tribute band the Byrds Collective—including a Family Guy animator and a sci-fi-alt.-history author—played their first gig at the Cellar and return this weekend to try and capture as much of the Byrds as five guys (playing eight roles, and that’s without Clarence White!) can possibly capture.
