Earlier this year, Metallica and Lou Reed made an album together. The sheer ludicrosity of their pairing was either going to make it amazing or ungodly—it was the latter. But the RE:GENERATION project is giving the venture into unlikely genre fusion a chance at redemption. In the film slated for release in February, five top DJs collaborate with respected musical figures of five genres. The result is a study in what happens when past collides with future. The Crystal Method took on R&B and worked with Martha Reeves and the Funk Brothers. The end result is the great song, “I'm Not Leaving,” but some sneak peeks at the film hint that both artists didn't always get along harmoniously.
