A cult favorite ghost story by the author of one of the most famous American political allegories ever, is also an enduring cult film based on a stageplay with a big cult following yet not often produced. Yes, Shirley Jackson of The Lottery—the wicked-cool short story you read in high school about a disturbing annual civic ritual—also created the mysterious haunted house on the hill and the arguably weirder (if all-too-human) characters who join the strange scientist’s experiment to discover the paranormal and their own brutal imaginations. Jackson’s dramatic genius at gothic realism finds a haunted home at the little local theater that can, in a small, spooky dark space where the troupe’s creativity invites us in as participants to take whatever Hill House and our own collective psyches can dish up. The Halloween performance also includes a costume contest and post-show party.
Fridays, Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Sundays, 2 p.m. Starts: Oct. 24. Continues through Nov. 16, 2014
