“Unconventional” is a good word to describe the musical style of Chris Otepka, the man behind acoustic-heavy, indie act The Heligoats. For one, verse to pre-chorus to chorus structure is practically non-existent. Instead, it’s the stories he tells with his lyrics that guide the structure of the sounds, leading them to unexpected places. Of course, this method works for a man who’s publicly proclaimed his goal of creating sounds he’s never heard before. And hey, it works for us, too.
