Ah the Melvins, simultaneously the most unlikely and influential grunge bands of all time. Hailing from Aberdeen WA, and mentors to another famous grunge band from the region you may have heard of, the Melvins started playing their unique brand of sludgy punk-infused metal jams in the mid '80s. Despite the fact that they never achieved lasting mainstream success, it's clear that a slew of bands defined as grunge drew their inspiration from these guys. Not least on this list is: Soundgarden, Nirvana and even Tool and Helmet. Side note: Melvin's guitarist Buzz Osborne joined forces with Faith No More vocalist and creative dynamo Mike Patton to form the super group Fantomas. If you haven't heard 2001's The Directors Cut, a collection of musically re-imagined and iconic cinematic songs, you might as well be living in a cave.
