Long Beach Opera—our favorite local troop of golden-voiced misfits—starts off their 2013 season with a salute to the great blue abyss. The Paper Nautilus samples from the prose of Marie Curie, Ethel Adnan, Pope Leo XIII, the Vulgate, Jackie Kay, and the English Bible to create a mind-bending operatic trip into the unknown, blurring the lines between dream and consciousness. Set against the majestic backdrop of the Aquarium of the Pacific, the US premiere of Gavin Bryars' work is an evening of song, art, and creatures of the deep. And much like those beings who lurk in dark waters, a musical piece like Nautilus is mysterious, complicated, magical—and must be experienced first hand to be fully understood.
