San Diego’s Silent Comedy spend plenty of time touring now, but founders and brothers Josh and John Zimmerman traveled the world before they traveled by band van. Their Pentecostal preacher father divested the family from its worldly possessions and took them to Thailand, India, Spain and more. (This kind of childhood experience would, of course, later inspire a song or two—like “Exploitation,” written to raise awareness of human trafficking in the Far East.) Equipped with a steampunk folk-rock sound—mustaches and banjos and radio-ready hooks!—they’ve racked up a nice set of awards in their hometown and opened for local favorites like Cold War Kids and Edward Sharpe, and they’re ready to take on the world (again) with their everything-new-is-old-again sound.
