Sorry, old bitter dudes: licensing your music for TV shows or commercials is no longer a crass, sellout move, it’s one of the main ways a band gets noticed. LA’s the Submarines owe pretty much all of their success to it: not only did they get their song “Brighter Discontent” in the fourth season finale of Nip/Tuck back in 2006, the characters actually lip-synced along to the lyrics—which was not even in the top 100 of weird things to happen on that show. In 2008, “You, Me and the Bourgeoisie” landed on an iPhone commercial. But more than two years removed from their last full-length, Honeysuckle Weeks, fans are looking forward to what’s next, and will hopefully get a glimpse on this current west coast mini-tour, where you don’t even have to turn on the TV to see them.
