The Walkmen used to almost completely own a certain kind of post-punky indie rock—that guitar, that voice and those lyrics that could probably find healthy new life on the last page of The New Yorker. And now that they’ve recently put out their newest album, Heaven, it turns out they’re back in control again. Heaven is focused, measured and precise in subtle and satisfying ways, the kind of thing that reveals just a little bit more on repeat listens. If there’s a new “The Rat,” maybe it’s the instantly engaging “Heartbreaker.” But then again, the Walkmen aren’t here to make their same old songs over and over. Instead, they’re here to make their good thing better.
