The sun is out, the weather is hot, and the heat is on: the seventh annual KCRW Good Food Pie Contest is Oct. 4 at UCLA's Fowler Museum. The winner this year gets a fancy KitchenAid stand mixer with a heated bowl (side note: BRB going to Surfas), but everyone who attends wins: the participants are asked to make two pies, one of which is to be distributed to the public.

Sound like it requires a lot of pie? Never fear: every year, the contest gets bigger and bigger. Last year, there had to have been 400 linear feet of pie, running double down long tables, while the judges got up, led by Pie Queen Evan Kleiman, and circulated around, mumbling words like “flaky” and “tender” and “dear God, why” around mouthfuls of coconut cream, salted-caramel apple, and curried chicken pie.
This year, the festival is expanding, and there's a Pie Stage where there will be workshops including the revamping of raspberry pie and why it matters which milk you choose with your pie.
Do you think you've got what it takes? Can you dethrone the kings and queens of pastry making? Get over to the website and register your pie now. Your entry fee of $15 helps cover the costs for using the facility, for security, for sanitation, etc.–the judges work for free pie.
