There’s a lot of suffering and pain depicted on stage during any production of the super-popular musical Rent. But the fictional slings and arrows that befall its cast pale in comparison to the real-life story of the play’s creator, Jonathan Larson. After spending seven years honing the show, Larson attended its last dress rehearsal before its Off-Broadway premiere on Jan. 24, 1996. He died the following morning of an undiagnosed aortic aneurysm. He was 35. tick, tick…BOOM is an earlier musical than Rent, and is a mostly autobiographical look at a struggling New York composer who fears he’s made the wrong career choice and questions his commitment to his craft. Larson got his name in the stars, but he never experienced the satisfaction of knowing.
