Torrance’s TOKiMONSTA was part of that first unbelievable generation of Low End Theory-born beatmakers and producers, releasing a ferocious roster of records in that high-water-mark year of 2010 that earned her a place alongside breakouts like Flying Lotus’ Cosmogramma and Gaslamp Killer and Gonjasufi’s A Sufi And A Killer. She’s further refined her sound since then, developing a fascinating aesthetic that works just as well for a pop song as it does for an infinitely detailed producer’s showcase. (For examples of both in action, check her collaborations with L.A. neo-disco vocalist Gavin Turek.) Her most recent Desiderium collides kosmiche spacescapes with instantly accessible pop, making yet another release that’s less an album than a self-contained little world.
