Whether it was the last dance at the club or you were trying to “hit them skins,” no doubt in the '90s there were more than a few R&B slow jams that put you in the mood. And with the 2nd annual Summer Breeze Festival coming this Saturday to the Queen Mary Park featuring Keith Sweat, Avant, Tony! Toni! Tone!, Silk, Jagged Edge, and many more, the great R&B jams the '90s provided is literally all we can think of. And youngsters, if you think Chris Brown crooning “just let me rock, sex you back to sleep girl” makes you want to hit the bed for a session, then you should’ve been around when lyrics were really sexy. You know, when lyrics as simple as “lay your head on my pillow” were like a magician’s abracadabra and bottoms were removed. Actually, we’re pretty sure some of the kids born in the late '90s were conceived to a few of these tunes. Ahhh reminiscing. Let’s do some more, shall we?
10- Xscape- Just Kickin’ It
Jermaine Dupri was turning water into wine in the '90s and when he turned us on to the group Xscape, we were all in. “Just Kickin It’” gave the ladies an alternative way to ease into sweet talking by making it seem like a total hang out that will obviously lead to smashing. Hey guys, we’ll treat you like this and make you some food but at the end of the day, we’re gonna bone down. To be honest, they could’ve taken out “kickin’” and replaced it with “dickin’” because that really was the name of the game. Props to the horny ladies of the world.
9- Color Me Badd- I Wanna Sex You Up
Well, there are no innuendos here folks. It’s clear what this track is implying and it’s pretty evident about what mood it’s going to put you in while listening to it. Upbeat and horned up. Period. And even though the song says “I’ll make you feel at home. Now let’s pour a glass of wine cause now we’re all alone,” it’s obvious that it’s all “foreplay talk” to get you warmed up for the main event. Which is getting all sorts of sexed up. And really, who wouldn’t want to hit the sheets after listening to this song? (Circa 1991.)
8- Sade- No Ordinary Love
If you didn’t knock some boots to Sade’s “No Ordinary Love” after a break-up in the '90s, it’s because you were a toddler. We’d be willing to guess every apologizing Romeo (yes, we’re man-blaming) put this song on, lit some candles, and got his girl back to this very track. Sade is gorgeous, the lyrics are soulful, and if you didn’t get the fuck down…excuse us, “make love” to this jam after a make-up session, you fucked up. Again.
7- Ginuwine- Pony
This is too easy. I mean, “If you’re horny, let’s do it. Ride it, my pony.” Hello?! He ain’t talking about taking it to the stables for a jaunt with some horsies! And while this song is pretty blatant in the words department, we’re pretty sure nine out of ten ladies were picturing Ginuwine’s dance moves while on their own man’s “saddle.” Ye fucking haw for this song that probably even had your mom and dad boning down in the '90s.
6- Jon B.- They Don’t Know
Back when Justin Timberlake was singing into his hairbrush and long before Justin Bieber was out of diapers (follow along kids), Jon B. was belting out tunes that made hearts melt and beds get mucho action. “They Don’t Know” is a classic, “hey girl forget about my past, bitches are just jealous of you being with me, I'm better because of you” song and the ladies of the 90’s were eating it up by the bowlful. Mix that together with songs like “Are U Still Down” and “Someone to Love” and Jon B. killed the '90s game so hard gals were willing to overlook his weird ass haircut. Now that, is a job well done.
5- Jodeci- Feenin’
These “bad boys of R&B” made so many love making songs in the '90s it’s insane to pick one. But we did. “Feenin’.” Holy hell, this song made chicks believe their “shit didn’t stink,” got EVERYONE laid, and with this song on repeat, it was a total freak fest making everyone want to do it all over again. And again. “Feenin'” legitimately still gives off those vibes and while writing this list, we listened to it twenty (+) times. It really takes you back to the days when dirty dancing and sweating up in the club was everything. Dammit we forgot how sexy this jam is! Oh and the remix? Forget about it…
4- Silk- Meeting in my Bedroom
The “Freak Me” boys can’t get any clearer than with the song “Meeting in my Bedroom.” There’s a meeting. It's in their bedroom. Party of two. Yeah, we get it and yeah, pencil us in. The only problem with this song is they’re asking you to bring the wine so it's BYOB but other than that, it’s obvious shit is definitely about to go down and you’re going to get turned out. And so many people did to this very song. And on the real, even if you did happen to be late and did make them wait, we’re pretty sure they’ll still let you into this “meeting.” Count on it.
3- R. Kelly- Bump 'n' Grind
Before R. Kelly was a household name for his extracurricular activities, R. Kelly was a bedroom name when it came to go-to tunes for making sweet, sweet love. R. Kelly wasn’t the only one who didn’t see anything wrong with a little bump and grind because folks in the '90s were pretty much bumping and grinding to his entire album “12 Play.” God damn this whole album is sexy af and almost twenty-three years later, our body is still calling for it.
2- Tony! Toni! Toné!- (Lay Your Head on My) Pillow
Call us crazy but when a guy is singing “you're the girl that knows my pleasure, so let me go down and find my treasure” there are only a few number of “cutie pies” that would say no. Tony! Toni! Toné! offers up a well-rounded library of tracks but this one, seductively and subtly is asking to seal the deal. And trust, there were plenty of deals sealed to this song. The best thing about “(Lay Your Head on My) Pillow” is it still stands (and lays) the test of time. The naked video helped too. Well, not that it needed any help but, yeah.
1- Keith Sweat- I'll Give All My Love to You
We’d be remiss if we didn’t put the king Mr. Keith Sweat in the #1 spot. He’s been sexifying tracks since the late '70s but he really made his mark in the '90s. Picking one song from Keith that made the ladies “sweat” is next to impossible but since we’re forced to for this list, we’re going with “I'll Give All My Love to You.” This song is the essence of romance because he’s basically saying this isn’t a one-night thing and he’s vowing to come running only to you to give up all his love. Swoon. And even now, all of these years later, he’s still making the girls (OK, women now) toss panties. We’ve seen it. And if you are going to this year’s Summer Breeze in Long Beach, no doubt you’ll witness it too.
