Trendzilla: Boycott Black Friday

What's with people who think Black Friday is a symbol of pure, American greed? Sure, a paid holiday and visiting with family is great, BUT WHAT ABOUT THE DEALZ, MAN?! Waking up at the butt crack of dawn after Thanksgiving isn't good enough anymore! Some of us have to go back to work on Friday because two paid holidays in a row would be insane—where do you think we are, Canada? That's why we need to forgo Thanksgiving dinner altogether to stampede into stores and squash our fellow countrymen that very evening!

Seriously, though: Don't go shopping any place that makes employees work on Thanksgiving. You do not need a flat-screen that badly. You do not need anything those stores are selling. And if thinking about all the workers who didn't get the holiday off doesn't make you feel guilty, then just step outside of yourself for a moment while pushing through waves of shoppers—looks a bit like a cattle herd, doesn't it?

Instead, we should be shopping small businesses this weekend. Many of the little guys are having post-Thanksgiving sales, except, you know, with their dignity still intact. Make a point to scroll through your favorite Etsy stores and look for a discount code, or stop by boutiques such as Brooklyn Harper (210 E. Fourth St., Santa Ana), Oh Hello Friend (122 N. Harbor Blvd., Fullerton) and the OC Mix Mart (3313 Hyland Ave., Costa Mesa) for special prices. But if you must wake up early, join protestors at Wal-Mart (blackfridayprotests.org) in SanTana or La Habra.

Now, go forth, small-business shoppers—before I get started on Thanksgiving in general.
