Trendzilla: Your Skin vs. the Santa Anas

The Santa Ana winds can go fuuuck themselves. Healthy, supple skin has a slightly acidic pH level, and when it becomes too basic, it feels scratchy. But taking a “refreshing” shower can be the most detrimental form of relief. Tap water tends to have basic pH levels, and—great news—so does manufactured soap! For dry-skin relief, try these remedies instead:

SILKWORM COCOONS
It's not nearly as creepy as it sounds. After running a cocoon (which can be purchased on Amazon!) under a bit of warm water, pop that white cloister onto your fingertip and rub it all over your face, paying attention to the crevices. The cocoon will soak up all your oil, gently exfoliate your skin and help to prevent wrinkles—all without washing. Plus, it turns a satisfying black after use!

HOMEMADE REMEDIES
Since skin is already in shock due to the weather change, we should be gentle to it, meaning no harsh exfoliants or toners. Instead, try a seasonal cranberry mask made by puréeing cranberries, mixing them with organic plain yogurt and local honey, then slathering the concoction on your face, leaving it there until dry. Cranberries are acidic and naturally exfoliating. Follow up with only jojoba oil as your moisturizer.

CLEAN EATING
It's strange how much money is spent on products when our appearance is mostly determined by what we consume. While our epidermis enjoys being slightly acidic, our insides like to be a little alkaline. Achieve this by drinking as much pH-neutral or alkaline water as you can stomach and eating lots of vegetables, grains and legumes.
