What are the cool kids up to these days? Spinning vinyl, donning Ramones t-shirts and going old-school DIY artsy with self-produced ‘zines, a hipster throwback of an enduring underground tradition. UC Irvine’s library calls all zine-ophiles and other creative types to learn about, celebrate and create their own exemplary personal iterations of the homemade magazine genre, whether comics, handwritten or hand-drawn stapled objet d’art, photocopied one-off small books or lovingly sewn and painted one-of-a-kind albums. Zine Fest features a look at UCI’s own collection, a special exhibit, academic appreciations from smart professors and librarians who study and collect ‘em, and a primer on Open Access along with, of course, the opportunity to meet others.
