Valient Thorr came from Planet Rock—Hawkwind’s, not Bambaataa’s—and back up their hard-nerd prog punk with a late-night pre-cable backstory about being aliens who crashed on Earth and cope through a combo of leather and shredding. (Kind of what happened to GWAR—is this the result of some coordinated USAF program we don’t know about?) They found a kindred spirit in producer Jack Endino (Nirvana, Soundgarden), who owned relic rock vinyl such as Sir Lord Baltimore and Iota, as legendary on Valient’s home planet Venus as it is here, and ever since, they’ve been slamming out songs that sound like Dave Brock followed Lemmy into Mötörhead. Live long, prosper young and leave a radioactive corpse!
