Artist Frank Romero has always had a connection to cars—in fact, if you ever drove down the 101, you probably saw his “Going To The Olympics” mural, just recently rescued from a paint-over that obscured his line of gloriously full-color automobiles. So it makes sense that he’s presenting this car-themed multi-media show at the Muck, where his own work will take its place alongside that of such Chicano art legends as Carlos Almaraz and Gilbert “Magu” Lujan, who started the pioneering art collective Los Four in the 1970s. (Romero and Almarez were both members, of course.) Expect to see the ubiquitous automobile as you’ve never seen it, reincarnated as icon, toy, supernatural force and more, depending on who was putting brush to canvas (or thumb to clay) when. Kind of gives the term “car culture” a whole new meaning, doesn’t it?
Wednesdays-Sundays, noon. Starts: April 16. Continues through Aug. 23, 2015
