Back in 1989, Hollywood writers understood the comic potential of reanimating a corpse with a crudely designed pulley system. It’s been a while since the film industry explored the possibilities of well-executed gag comedy—there’s just more money in the ad nauseum rehashing of superhero movies. While the rest of society shuffles into theaters to catch the umpteenth installment of the latest comic book flick, we hope our readers will head down to the Regency South Coast Village for a showing of Weekend at Bernie’s. The ‘80s romp follows the story of two corporate climbers who discover their coked-out boss Bernie Lomax has been murdered. Determined not to join him, they set about convincing the world he’s not actually dead—and good old-fashioned hilarity ensues.
