THE WEENIE ROAST HAS BITE
Old and new, hip and cheesy—the annual KROQ Weenie Roast at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater has something for everyone. Stone Temple Pilots are headlining, hipster faves Spoon will be there, Devo fanatics get another opportunity to wear plastic hats, and there’s a chance to see Sublime With Rome before they tour other parts of the country. Even Courtney Love’s newest incarnation of Hole are performing!
Cage the Elephant, Chevelle, Deftones, Paramore, Passion Pit, Silversun Pickups, The Dirty Heads, The Temper Trap and Against Me! are also on the bill. WIN OC MUSIC AWARD, GET ON THE WARPED TOUR
Maybe it’s too early to start thinking about the 2011 OC Music Awards, but this news is just too good. When Warped Tour founder Kevin Lyman presented the Best Album honor at the 2010 awards, he was so impressed with the local talent that he offered next year’s Best Live Band winner a performance slot on all four dates of the 2011 SoCal leg of the Vans Warped Tour. That means all you local bands better start getting your live act together–after all, the next awards show is only 11 months away on March 5, 2011. From a May 7 post by Nate Jackson.
THE DIRTY HEADS HAVE NO. 1 HIT
Huntington Beach’s The Dirty Heads debuted their 22-track Any Port In a Storm on the Billboard charts with respectable numbers (No. 10 on the Independent Albums chart, No. 16 on the Rock Albums chart, No. 55 on the Billboard 200). The single “Lay Me Down,” which features Rome (of Sublime With Rome) on lead vocals, also went to No. 1 on radio charts last week and was featured on Rolling Stone’s “Hot List.” From a May 6 post by Robert Masucci.
WHAT’S THE GOLDEN BEAR CLUB?
The people behind The Golden Bear Club are starting to generate buzz for what is supposed to be Huntington Beach’s newest venue. The original Golden Bear Club was demolished in 1986, but at its peak, it housed some of the most legendary music acts, including B.B. King, the Doors and Bob Dylan. Now, local developers are planning to rebuild a 7,500-square-foot venue where the original was on Pacific Coast Highway and Main Street. While everyone involved is keeping mum, various Facebook and Twitter updates are keeping the name current. The club’s Facebook profile says the 600-person-capacity, live-entertainment club is scheduled to open in early 2011, and a little birdie told us that it is definitely into booking acts more like LCD Soundsystem than Jefferson Starship.
