Considered one of the world’s most beloved children’s storytellers, author Roald Dahl may have disowned this cinematic version of his book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, upset that it focused more on Wonka than Charlie, but fortunately, no one ever cares what an author thinks after the rights are sold. Well, fortunately in this case, at least. Filled with rotten children, buffoonish adults, enough cultural messages to shake a little person at, and a Wonka (Gene Wilder) who doesn’t need eight pounds of makeup to convince us he’s a bit of a crackpot (it’s called acting), this box office bomb was revived in the 1980s and is now considered one of the greatest children’s films of all time. See it again on the super screen for some silver fun. Wait a minute—strike that, reverse it.
