Death is rarely a funny thing. Dying in the twisted world of video gaming, on the other hand, can often lead to hilarious results. The dreaded “Game Over” screen has been an integral part of gaming since they were first made, and if your failure isn't bad enough, some of the screens really like to rub it in your face that you suck at video games.
Instead of a simple “Game Over” screen, there are certain games that go the extra mile in order to emphasize that you've lost. Other times, these screens are just plain weird. The following is compilation of the most irritating and hilarious Game Over screen in video gaming.
]
10. “Let us go out this evening for pleasure. The night is still young.”
(Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Playstation, 1997)
…unless it's a horrible night to have a curse, then we should stay in and order a pizza.
9. “GAME OVER RETURN OF GANON”
(Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, NES, 1987)
Here we see a simple screen, explaining that the player has lost and that the game's villain, Ganon, has returned. A silhouette of the pig-faced demon appears, followed by his evil laugh. Creepy! The funny thing is, however, that Ganon doesn't actually appear in the game.
8. Time Paradox!
(Various)
Some game narratives involve a character retelling a story from his/her past. Obviously, the death of that character would lead to a time paradox! This can result in some hilarious game over screen. For example:
- “You've created a time paradox! Snake, you can't go changing the future like that!” (Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, PS2, 2004)
- “No, that didn't really happen.” (Prince Of Persia: The Sands of Time, Gamecube/PS2/XBOX/PC, 2003)
- “Horse hockey. You really mean to tell me you were dissolved in acid.” (Monkey Island II: Lechuck's Revenge, After Guybrush tells Elaine that he was killed by being submerged in a pool of acid during his adventures.)
7. “YOU FUCKED UP”
(Scarface: The World is Yours, Wii/PC/PS2/Xbox, 2006)
“YOU FUCKED UP”– written in all caps, with no punctuation needed. Scarface's mission failure screen is all business, and is taken straight out of the movie.
6. “It's official, you suck!”
(Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, Arcade, 1995)
If you're unsure whether you suck at video games or not, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 will make it clear. After losing the Noob Saibot boss fight (which you most likely did), Shao Kahn will make it official that your skills “suck.” Now you know!
5. “Congratulations on Your Recent Death! Thanks for playing Space Quest III. As usual, you've been a real hoot.”
(Space Quest III: The Pirates of Pestulon, PC, 1989)
It's not often that game over screens are courteous and polite. The one in Space Quest III, for example, is untypically pleasant. Instead of making a mockery of you, they celebrate what is typically an unfortunate event. How nice![
4. “YOU AND YOUR FRIENDS ARE DEAD. GAME OVER”
(Friday the 13th, NES)
Wow. Considering that Friday the 13th was on a system in which characters are typically “defeated” instead of being killed, this is quite a traumatic thing for children to see during the 1980s. Hopefully, some naïve kid didn't take this message literally then.
3. “Game Over Yeeeah!”
(Sega Rally Championship, Arcade, 1995)
So you're out of quarters to continue playing Sega's Sega Rally Championship. At least you get a
2. “You Lost. YOU ARE WORTHLESS AND WEAK. Try Again?”
(Teleroboxer, Virtual Boy, 1995)
Jesus Chirst, Rick! Not only am I weak, but worthless, too? What the hell, man? What a way to kick a guy when he's down!
1. “You are Dead! Dead! Deeead!”: Death By Guitar Warrior
(Total Distortion, PC, 1995)
This is it. There is no other song out there that will mock your death as much as “Death By Guitar Warrior.” Completely ridiculous, drawn out, and holding nothing back, this song is without a doubt the greatest Game Over screen ever designed.
And if the song hasn't made it clear to you yet, you are dead.
