At the corner of Goldenwest Street and Edinger Avenue stands an unappealing shopping center. Every store and restaurant in the plaza is undergoing a much-needed renovation, taking away storefronts and replacing them with plywood arches topped with matching white and red signs. But one shop doesn't seem to conform to the construction—TeaArias. They decided to add their own banner to the construction site, advertising their signature teas and smoothies.
The teas are sweet, the boba is chewy, and the smoothies are thick, creamy, and filled with healthy ingredients. But the real treat at TeaArias isn't advertised on their big banner nor their website. In a glass case near the cash register sits large cakes, which look normal at first glance. But move closer, and discover that they're missing frosting and have at least 25 layers—not of cake, but of crepes.
With only two crepe cake flavors at TeaArias—plain and matcha—the decision doesn't seem too difficult. But after sampling both, you'll realize that it is. The plain cake has a hint of milkiness to it, courtesy of the milk pastry cream between each layer, while the matcha flavor has green tea pastry cream smeared between each crepe, and is slightly bitter from the matcha powder dusted on top. Whether you choose plain or matcha, both cakes are sweet, creamy, and surprisingly light, a delicious combination that landed the tea shop third place in the Taste of Huntington Beach's dessert category.
TeaArias' crepe cakes are baked fresh each day with the same process—crepe, pastry cream, crepe, pastry cream, repeated over and over again, 25 times. It's a procedure so easy, you could master it at home. But why do that when you can score a slice for $4.50, or a whole cake for $40? Enjoy!
