The years may pass, my journeys might take me farther and farther away, yet the one Orange County dish that I find myself craving more and more is the fatteh at Kareem's Restaurant in Anaheim. It's finally getting its well-deserved moment in the media sun, 13 years after I first wrote about one of the oldest restaurants in Little Arabia. KPCC-FM 89.3's Off-Ramp just did a segment on Kareem's following a big Los Angeles Times piece last year. Most of the write-ups focus on their falafels, the best in the United States. But believe me, gentle readers: as someone who's been eating here since owner Nancy Hawari's now-adult children were in the corner doing their junior-high homework, their best dish—one of the best in Orange County, really—is the fatteh.
Last year, it was at #16, so lemme just repeat what I wrote then:
Slow-cooked garbanzo beans mixed up with toasted pita chips, lost in a sea of warmed yogurt, with almond slivers, parsley, sumac and a touch of olive oil, fatteh is not for the faint of heart. But oh, how hearty this dish is—maybe a bit much for the summer, but it makes oatmeal seem like water in comparison in consistency. Give me fatteh over cereal any day—and this is coming from a many who ate nothing but Lucky Charms for the first 16 years of mornings of his life or something…
If you haven't eaten at Kareem's, then you're not real OC. And if you have eaten at Kareem's but not the fatteh, then you're not real Kareem's—BOOM.
